Interpreting the Trends: Black and Navy Blue

Fall is just around the corner which can only mean one thing, shopping the fall trends.  This year, rules are being broken as the runways were sprinkled with black and navy pairings.  This long forbidden matchup has been blown out of the water by fashionistas everywhere.  This trend evokes a “dark romance” with different hues and textures making it perfect for date night wear.  You can incorporate this trend into your wardrobe long before the weather turns cold by stocking up on some beautiful Gemvara pieces that are sure to make a statement long before your long sleeves and opaque tights.

How to Wear it: Stacked Wedges

One of my favorite trends for spring/summer is definitely super tall wedges. Try them with casual outfits, or take a date night look up a notch with some added height. Here are a few options to try:

Colored denim is extremely fun and very on trend. Pair it with a pair of slip on sandals for comfort and style.

Change the color palette to something a little more neutral. Black is always office appropriate and tones down the height and pattern of these gorgeous wedges.

Have a little fun in a flouncy sundress and hot pink wedges.

How to Wear it: Neon

The trend thermometer says neon is hot, hot, HOT for spring. You can subtly incorporate it into your wardrobe using varying degrees of accessories, or go full out in an entirely neon getup. Here are my suggestions for even the most timid fashionista:

20 degrees: try a minimal piece of jewelry like the Ettika Neon Green and Rhinestone Bangle or the Neon Lightning Strike Necklace.

40 degrees: neon nail polish is a great way to play with the trend while keeping the rest of your outfit relatively neutral. Forever 21 has tons of options, including a few that glow in the dark!

50 degrees: feeling a bit bolder? Throw on a pair of neon peep toe heels, like this Pour La Victoire pair, but keep your toe nail polish neutral.

65 degrees: a bold, eye catching bag like this neon green satchel will definitely get you noticed.

80 degrees: a neon cardi like this neon kiwi cashmere beauty from J.Crew can add a bit of oomph to an office look.

100 degrees: colored denim in itself is already a statement piece, but when you bump it up to neon status, it makes for an extreme statement. J Brand’s neon purple skinnies add an unexpected neon hue to your outfit, but they’re not for the faint of heart!

120 degrees: if your motto is “go bold or go go home”, embrace a neon dress. Go full-out fabulous in this hot pink Michael Kors shift dress or this DVF layered chiffon number.

Get Dotty

Polka Dot Ring, Polka Dot Skimmers, Pouch, Dress, Scarf, Pants, Manicure

Nothing gets us in the mood for spring quite like fun prints and colors. We’ve explored florals, mint, monochromatic and today it’s all about spots! From Parisian-girl skimmers to dot jewelry, we can’t get enough of this playful pattern.

Not ready to jump right into polka dot pants? Try a simple shirt or even colorful glassware. To get the adorable spotted manicure for yourself (above; originally featured on eat.sleep.wear), try using Sally Hansen’s nail art pens. They’re so easy it’s almost foolproof!

How to Wear it: the Knot

Sources: 1,2,3,4,5.

From hairstyles to jewelry, the knotted trend is everywhere. Here are a few ways to embrace the trend, no matter what your style:

If your style is: sophisticated

Take a cue from fashionable ladies like Oscar PR Girl pump up the volume with the ever popular topknot. In this case, bigger is definitely better, so if your hair isn’t long enough to achieve the look, try the sock bun technique.

If your style is: preppy

Go nautical with knotted rope bracelets, like the Trioton Collection from local brand Kiel James Patrick. Sailboat not included.

If your style is: bohemian

Try a turban. Yes, a turban! Go full out with a more traditional turban, or test the waters with a headband style.

If your style is: trendy

Look for a knotted, form fitting mini skirt in a bright hue.

If your style is: classic

Add a piece of knotted jewelry, like this Plain Lover’s Knot Ring, for a subtle take on the trend.

Twist on the Trend: Monochromatic Color Block

This post is part of a guest blogger series featuring Alana Brooks of The Good Girl Gone Blog.

Color blocking seems to be the trend that will never end…and I’m ok with that. You worked it this winter in bright knit tights paired with pencil skirts, skinny belts and blouses, and you’ll be wearing it again this spring with peep toe heels, candy colored capris and fun colored tops. Designers are even talking about color blocking making its way into 2013!

An interesting take on the trend brings color blocking to the next level by adding a monochromatic twist. Instead of pairing uniquely colored pieces, stick to the same general color palette and experiment with varying shades. Here’s some inspiration I pulled from the latest J.Crew catalogue:

Notice how even though the looks above contain at least 2 key pieces in the same general color, they also add an additional hue an extra playful edge. The best way to achieve that edge is definitely with your accessories; wear a fun skinny belt, try a bold statement necklace or choose a bright pair of pumps to complete the look.

Extra credit: find one item that encompasses the monochromatic trend in itself, like these amethyst and rose quartz earrings!

Inspired by: Oscar de la Renta

The Internet was abuzz about Oscar De La Renta’s newest collection, and why wouldn’t it be? With a flourish of gauzy material, girly design and drool worthy accessories, this collection will definitely inspire fashionistas on and off the runway. One standout trend from the show was bedazzled headbands, a trend that definitely influenced the red carpet scene. Jeweled tiaras, glittery headbands and sparkly barrettes were everywhere and they work just as well with jeans and fun flats as they do with an evening gown.

Here are a few of my favorite options:
