A Black and White Affair

The “black” carpet at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards last night was a sea of black and white… jewelry that is. The stars at this year’s VMAs, held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, have not strayed far from the jewelry trends of last year’s award show, showing up in earrings made of black and colorless diamonds.

The VMAs, which honor musicians and the music videos they create, is usually a venue for the outrageous and extreme when it comes to outfits. Although we can always expect that from the Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry types, this year the stars seemed pretty tame. The only edginess we really saw came from the black and white palette, in fact, many stars arrived wearing primarily black or gray ensembles.

Selena Gomez and Britney Spears were both on the same page with black, gem earrings in gold settings. Katy Perry wore large, diamond studs — a subtle piece to her exuberant “broken record” outfit. Beyonce (who announced during the night that she is pregnant!) and Zoe Saldana both wore long, diamond-encrusted earrings with black and colorless diamonds.

What do you think of the black and white theme? Should the stars have experimented more with color or do you like the classic combo?

The Young and The Stylish

The stars at this past Sunday’s 2011 Teen Choice Awards know how to work the “blue” carpet. Their styles ranged from classy to wacky, but with one common denominator: statement earrings and bold rings.

Selena Gomez, who performed and took home a surfboard (the award show’s signature trophy) for Choice Actress Comedy, looked stunning in a pale gold, mini dress with dramatic drop earrings by Carla Amorim.

Blake Lively, winner of Choice TV Actress Drama for her role in Gossip Girl, gave a shout out to her fans saying, “Without you we would be nowhere, so thank you so much for this award and thank you for making it possible!” She wore a bright tangerine frock and platinum jewels by Lorraine Schwartz.

Taylor Swift took home six Teen Choice Awards that night including Choice Music Female Artist. She wore a sweet, full-skirted white dress with Neil Lane earrings that looked very similar to Kate Middleton’s diamond drops and Gemvara’s Kate Earrings.

Cameron Diaz wore large, geometric rings by Vhernier and Vita Fede to the award show. She took home another surfboard to add to her collection for her role in Bad Teacher.

Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars appeared at the premier wearing both stunning drop earrings and a bold ring. The Switched at Birth actress, Kate Leclerc, was also seen in an earring/ring combo with her ring from Baccarat and Lana Jewelry earrings.

Hoops for Every Occasion

Although according to us, hoop earrings are always in style, recently it seems hoops have arrived in a big way. Celebrities of all ages have been spotted wearing large, hoop earrings on a variety of different occasions.

Sarah Jessica Parker was seen wearing thin, gemstone-encrusted hoops similar to Gemvara’s Two Inch Inside-Outside Hoops. This style is especially dazzling for an evening event as seen on Sarah Jessica, but is also equally appropriate for day.

Cameron Diaz shows us how glamorous hoops can be while wearing them on the red carpet. They are an elegant, but edgy addition to her sparkling gown. On the other hand, Selena Gomez gives us a more relaxed way to wear this trend. She sports large, silver hoops with a slouchy sweater for a laid-back afternoon look.

A classic staple for any woman, hoop earrings can easily become the most versatile piece in your jewelry wardrobe. Dressed up or down, there are virtually no limits to how you wear these jewels. Teen Dreams

At this year’s Teen Choice Awards, starlets sparkled in rings that were jaw-breaker sized. These super-sized baubles are bold and colorful, just the right accent to sky-high shoes and miles of leg. The top choice of the night: bold cocktail rings set with pink and red tourmaline.

Selena Gomez topped off her white flowy dress with a pink tourmaline ring by Brumani. Emma Roberts made a statement with an Amrapali ring set with red tourmaline, which is also known as rubellite. Pretty Little Liars’ Troian Bellisario chose Sutra earrings in pink tourmaline to add a punch of bold color. And no party is complete without the Kardashian sisters, who chose to accessorize with Bavna jewels. Kim Kardashian echoed the big-ring theme but in diamonds, not tourmaline.

Rings That Say "I Don't"

There are two types of “promise rings,” one that signifies a vow of chastity until marriage, and another that represents a promise of monogamy with a loved one. Surprisingly enough, some of the hottest and most successful celebrities dominating our daughters’ iPods and DVR-ed TV shows are dedicated to saving themselves for marriage, and have shown that by wearing their promise rings proudly.

The Disney Channel’s Miley Cyrus, star of Hannah Montana, stated on her web series The Miley and Mandy Show that she wears a promise ring. Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez, also from the Disney gang, wear promise rings as well.

The promise ring trend is alive in the music business as well. The Jonas Brothers have given a vow of chastity until marriage. All three of them wear promise rings, which comedian Russell Brand made a comment about while hosting the VMA’s this year. Jordin Sparks, one of the winners on America’s most popular show American Idol, has made numerous statements about her choice to wear a promise ring, and even defended the Jonas Brothers’ in their decision to do so as well.

The greatest part about gifting a promise ring to your daughter or another young woman in your life is that it’s a stylish personal statement. There aren’t any restrictions on style. In fact, you are welcome to design your own rings for your recipients, choosing any color diamond, gemstone, shape, or size that would please them. Some promise rings even have religious symbols such as a diamond or gemstone cross.

Actress, writer and improviser Brooke Lenzi is a performer on stage and screen in Los Angeles. She likes gifts that come in small packages.
