How To Choose Red-Carpet Jewels

Ever wonder how celebrities choose what jewelry to wear at red-carpet events?

Besides hiring a stylist, some stars get the privelege of attending Michael O’Connor’s exclusive and fabulous jewelry suites. It is here that jewelry and style expert, Michael, curates a collection of jewels from top designers and allows celebs to try on and choose their favorites. It’s a veritable fairy tale for any fashion-hound.

We are so honored that Michael chose our gems to be featured in his Golden Globes Suite this year. (Gemvara was also included in his 2011 Emmy Suite and our earrings were worn by actress Retta Sirleaf).

Here are some shots from Michael’s 2012 Golden Globes Suite, as well as a video highlighting the top jewelry styles of the season. Which piece is your favorite?

Get The Look: Emma Watson

As if being an actress and model weren’t enough for Emma Watson, she also happens to be an ivy-league student, cutting-edge stylish, and absolutely adorable. Did we mention she’s only 21!

In true Emma fashion, she arrived looking dressed up (not over-the-top) to the premiere of My Week with Marilyn in the UK last week. Her fun black-and-white Jason Wu number was very holiday chic and her Solange Azagury-Partridge earrings, Jimmy Choos, and leopard clutch finished off the look flawlessly. Emma’s pixie haircut was also perfect for showcasing her intricate earrings.

In the movie, Emma plays the wardrobe mistress, Lucy, who is wooed by assistant director Colin Clark (played by Eddie Redmayne). The film chronicles a week in the life of Marilyn as she is introduced to the pleasures of 1950s Britain while filming Sir Lawrence Olivier’s The Prince and the Showgirl. Michelle Williams plays Marilyn and is already rumored to receive a Best Actress nomination for the coming 2012 Oscars.

While Michelle may have stolen the show on-screen, Emma owned the red-carpet. To get her look for less try Gemvara’s Naked Petite Earrings in black onyx. These dainty dangle earrings come in round or cushion and are a charming compliment to any outfit this holiday season. They are great for teens or adults, but also come in a larger size if “shock and awe” is more your style. Snag them this year (as a gift or for yourself) in any gem of your choosing!

Best Jewelry of the AMAs

Silver metallics may have populated the red-carpet at last night’s 2011 American Music Awards, but Taylor Swift’s sequins took home the gold.

Taylor, who turns 22 this December, won three awards last night: Favorite Female Country Artist, Favorite Country Album, and biggest of all, Entertainer of the Year (beating out Adele, Lady Gage, Lil Wayne and Katy Perry!). We’d like to award Taylor one more – Best Jewelry of the Night.

Taylor not only wowed in her Reem Acra, strapless gown, but she also wore the most envy-inducing emerald earrings. The bright green color could be spotted from yards away and looked especially lively against her sleek ponytail (a refreshing choice). Taylor follows in a long line of other famous stars that also have a penchant for emerald, including Sophia Vergara and Angelina Jolie.

Although in our eyes Taylor won by a landslide, our runners-up also dressed to impress. Christa B. Allen, a star in the new hit-series Revenge, arrived wearing some juicy gem earrings, two bold cocktail rings, and a snakeskin cuff. Her jewels and accessories heightened her outfit and her earrings reminded us of our Naked Cushion Double Earrings in smoky quartz.

Katherine Heigl, who is not a musician herself, but happens to be married to one, is our second runner-up. She arrived with hubby Josh Kelly and together they presented Taylor Swift with the award for Best Country Album. Katherine is not normally one to reveal too much skin, yet she chose to wear a very low-cut dress. We think she totally rocked it. Her Sutra tassel earrings were a fabulous compliment and they added a little fun to her sexy look.

Twilight Gems

Since Edward (the brooding teenage vampire) and his beloved Bella first took to the big screen back in 2008, each film in the Twilight Saga has taken the world by storm. Breaking Dawn – Part I, the fourth film and the first of the finale, is no exception. Boasting a slew of top-tier celebrities, the L.A. premiere on Monday night proved that point.

While most people are abuzz about the on-screen wedding that will occur between Edward and Bella (mostly because the leads, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, are actually dating), we’d like to focus on the present. Forget the potential wedding dress — for now — and let’s talk about the amazing jewel-tone gowns worn at the premiere!

We were blown away by how fabulous each and every star looked. We were especially thrilled when we realized that each female cast member was actually wearing a perfect gem color. Kristen Stewart arrived in iolite, Nikki Reed in green amethyst, Ashley Greene in ruby, Mackenzie Foy in sapphire, and last but certainly not least, Stephenie Meyer showed up in the signature vamp color, black onyx.

These colors inspired us to pair each gown with some exceptional, juicy jewels. Some match the dresses perfectly, while others complement accordingly. This is a great example of how to pair jewelry with your outfit (another way to choose the perfect gem). Who’s your favorite?

Kristen Stewart: 1, 2, 3

Nikki Reed: 1, 2, 3

Ashley Greene: 1, 2, 3

Mackenzie Foy: 1, 2, 3

Stephenie Meyer: 1, 2, 3

Big Country

Last Wednesday was a big night for country music stars as it kicked off the 45th annual Country Music Awards.

Held at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, the star-studded night was not only packed with unbelievable performances and crazy presenters (including Eric Stonestreet of Modern Family, Hank Williams, and Miss Piggy), it was also big in terms of fashion. Ladies and gentlemen, the women of country music do not mess around.

Aside from the over-the-top sparkly gowns, country music’s leading ladies rocked a variety of drop earrings. Good thing these stunners, featuring art deco styles and enormous gems, were big enough to be seen behind all the hair!

Carrie Underwood, the host of the evening alongside Brad Paisley, changed more times than we could count, but arrived on the red carpet wearing bold diamond and gem earrings from Johnathon Arndt. They matched her sequined gold dress perfectly and she looked lovely as always. Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum also wore a gold gown, but she opted for large white gemstone earrings to complete her retro-glam look. Taylor Swift, country music’s sweetheart and winner of the award for Entertainer of the Year, donned art deco Lorraine Schwartz drops to match her dove-grey number.

Jennifer Nettles, the angelic voice behind the band Sugarland, sported smaller gemstone drops surrounded by diamonds. The dark green earrings were the perfect paring to her sea-foam halter dress and messy up-do. Martina McBride, who performed during the show, arrived on the carpet wearing massive multistone chandelier earrings. The bright colored gems could not be masked by Martina’s brunette locks and they shone against her black ensemble.

Last, but certainly not least, Miranda Lambert arrived in a gorgeous custom Haute Hippe gown with Jordan Alexander intricate earrings. Miranda and her hubby, Blake Shelton, both took home the awards for Best Female and Best Male Vocalist of the Year. Now ain’t that sweet!

Get The Look: Hayden Panettiere

Hayden Panettiere knows how to bring it. From super-hero chick to quintessential high school cheerleader (and even as Amanda Knox), Hayden has proven she can act as any type of teen. Yet, no matter what adolescent role she plays on-screen, off-screen she’s nothing short of a lady. The star recently made a stunning appearance at the highly anticipated premiere of her new movie, “Fireflies in the Garden,” also starring Julia Roberts.

Hayden looked lovely in a sparkling mini-dress with metallic, crocodile print pumps. We especially loved her pear-drop earrings. These black gems surrounded by diamonds looked exquisite and were the perfect statement against her pulled-back curls. Although they are dazzling, we know diamonds can cost a pretty penny. So to get Hayden’s look for less take a peek at Gemvara’s Monsoon Earrings.

These gorgeous gem drop earrings look beautiful in black onyx like Hayden’s, but they are also the perfect piece to match to your eye color. Because the gems are not surrounded by any metal, the rich color of the gemstone will really make your eyes pop! We love the idea of blue topaz for those blue-eyed babes, smoky quartz for brown-eyed girls, and green amethyst for the green-eyed gals. These earrings are simple enough to be worn every day, but also luxurious enough for your next red carpet event.

Get The Look: Emmy Earrings

Although many stars at this year’s 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards kept it minimal when it came to the jewels (as to not compete with the standout gowns) they made up for it in the color and carat-weight of the ones they chose. Stacked bracelets, bold dangle earrings and antique styles were among the popular trends of the night. Here we highlight a few of our favorite simple, yet stunning earrings and show you how to get the look.

Arianne Palicki wore a pair of halo amethyst studs she picked out on her own. Arianne plays Tyra Collette on the show Friday Night Lights, which finally took home it’s first Emmy Sunday night for Best Writing. We matched her gemstone studs to our Margarita Earrings in amethyst and diamond. Minka Kelly, who stars in fall’s new series Charlie’s Angels, wears Tiffany & Co. platinum earrings. Get her look for less with Gemvara’s Gem Drop Earrings in diamond and white gold.

Julianna Margulies, who won an Emmy this year for Outstanding Actress in a Drama for her role as Alicia in The Good Wife, wears simple diamond studs. Try our Classic 8mm Stud Earrings to copy Julianna’s elegant ear. Olivia Munn wore Bulgari emerald drops, which coincide with Gemvara’s Belle Earrings in emerald and yellow gold. Olivia, who is a correspondent on The Daily Show, celebrated the shows 9th win on Sunday.

Julie Bowen of Modern Family racked up the awards, as well as the jewelry accolades, at this year’s Emmys. Her Neil Lane, pear-drop, black diamond earrings were a favorite of the night, as well as her acting — Julie personally took home an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and she celebrated Modern Family‘s win for Outstanding Comedy Series. To get Julie’s look for less take a peek at our Pear Gem Drop Earrings in black onyx. Emmy Awards veteran, Megan Mullally of Will and Grace, wears beautiful blue topaz drops. See a similar style with Gemvara’s Cushion Essential Earrings.

Finally, Retta of Parks and Recreation wore Gemvara’s own rock crystal earrings from our new Naked Gems collection, launching in November. Gwyneth Paltrow, the sexy subsitute teacher in Glee, also wore Neil Lane black diamond drops. Capture Gwyneth’s look with our Dream Earrings — after all, a girl can dream, right?

Red Carpet Style

While it is “Wedding Wednesday” we decided that we’re still not done gushing over the Emmy styles just yet. So in true compromising fashion we’re giving you a little bit of both! Wedding dress meet your Emmy dress equivalent.

Although red was rampant on the red carpet this year, there were two actresses whose dresses looked especially wedding-esque. Cat Deeley’s Monique Lhuillier gown immediately caught our eye. The silver and gold sequined dress features a sweetheart neckline and a gorgeous white tulle train. It’s also tied at the waist with a grey braided rope belt. The mix of gold and silver make for an ivory effect that softens the white tulle. We think this would be the perfect gown for a fall or winter wedding.

The next actress whose dress we thought was appropriately bridal was Elisabeth Moss. This Marchesa gown is a form fitting, nude color with exquisite silver beading. The embellishments are in a leaf motif that gives the effect of looking almost like lace (a big wedding trend this season). Moss pairs her gown with simple, yet stunning chandelier earrings and a cocktail ring. The champagne color of this dress also appeals to us for a fall or winter ceremony.

Would you wear one of these gowns as a wedding dress?

Gemvara Goes to The Emmys!

We couldn’t have been more thrilled when we spotted Retta Sirleaf on the Emmy red carpet last night. We love her for cracking us up in her role as Donna Meagle on NBC’s comedy series, Parks and Recreation, but last night we loved her even more for bringing that sunny personality to the red carpet… wearing Gemvara gems, no less!

At last night’s 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards, Retta quite literally “rocked” our rock crystal drop earrings, a piece from our new Naked Gems collection set to debut on our site in November. These luxe, dangling, earrings were a stunning compliment to Retta’s gorgeous, bright yellow gown.

We are honored that Retta chose our jewelry to wear to the award show. Retta tried on our pieces a few days before the show at Michael O’Connor’s Emmy Suite at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. Michael, an acclaimed jewelry stylist, chose a few of our pieces to be featured in his highly curated collection of jewelry for Emmy Nominees. Since all our jewelry is customizable, Retta also tried on our earrings in Citrine, but ultimately settled on the sparkling rock crystal. We think she made the right choice!

Who Wore It Best?

Tangerine frocks and turquoise jewelry are having a moment. For such an unlikely color combination it was surprising to see two celebrities both show up last week in similar ensembles. Blake Lively showed off her leather dress at the 2011 Teen Choice Awards, while Rose McGowan modeled her wrap-style dress at the 10th Annual InStyle Summer Soiree.
