Our Guide to the Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

Posted by in How To | No Comments

With Mother’s Day right around the corner (mark your calendars for May 12th), we have compiled some of our favorite ways to customize the perfect gift for mom. With a little inspirational help from us and the ability to customize, your friends at Gemvara are here to help you create a gift that mom will cherish forever.

Create by Color

Choose birthstones of the children to create an extra special gift for mom, or customize in mom’s favorite hues to make her gift sparkle.

Check her Jewelry Box

The best way to get to know your mom’s jewelry is by checking it out yourself.  If she prefers smooth, clean lines, our curated selection of simply stated pieces could be the right fit.  Is her taste more intricate? If so, our delicately detailed pieces will dazzle her.

Capture a Memory

A sentimental memory of the vacation at the beach or a person close to her heart can be captured through our charms or initial pendants and any memory can last forever when her gift is custom made.

5 Startups That Can Give Your Mom the Best Mother’s Day Ever This Year

As seen on bostinno.com:

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 14th, and while flowers, cards and chocolates are nice, your mom is special. In fact, she’s the best mom in the world, right? Right! So give her the best of the best. Shower her in diamonds, pay someone to do her dirty work and let these five startups take care of the rest. Happy Mother’s Day to all you mommas out there!

TaskRabbit – Growing up, your mom did it all for you. She cooked, cleaned and ran errands, all with a smile on her face. This Mother’s Day, give your mom a break, and send her a TaskRabbit to take care of the chores – from doing the laundry to weeding the garden. If you post the task before Monday, May 14th, TaskRabbit is offering $10 toward any Task, using the code ILOVEMOM.

Vsnap – Can’t be with Mom this Mother’s Day? Sometimes a Hallmark card just doesn’t cut it. Mommy wants to hear the sound of your voice and see your shining face. Thanks to the Boston-based startup Vsnap, you can send your mom a quick, 60-second video message, telling her how much you love her!

SittingAround – Know a mother with young kids? Point her to SittingAround, so she can take a day to herself without the kiddos running around. Founded by MassChallenge alums, SittingAround is an online babysitting co-op that allows parents to swap their time for free childcare. Additionally, earlier this year, SittingAround launched its Sitter Marketplace, a tool for parents to connect with, vet, book and share paid babysitters.

Gemvara – Mom deserves something special, and you know it. Gemvara allows you to make unique, custom jewelry, all from your desktop. The prices are a bit steep, but get your siblings to pitch in, and Mom will be beaming as bright as the gem in that necklace when she sees it.

Birchbox – If your mom likes to be pampered, Birchbox is the way to go. For just $10 per month, Birchbox delivers a curated box of beauty products straight to your door. The box features a range of samples from well-known brands and up-and-comers, so Mom can test the waters on all the anti-aging cream she wants. Not like she needs it, of course.

Gift Guide: Classic Beauty

Posted by in Gem Trends | No Comments

Classic Beauty

The Classic Beauty is a woman you know well. She could be your mom, sister, cousin, aunt, or even you. Quality bags, accessories, and well-made wardrobe pieces have a place in her heart, while trends make her shiver. H&M, Zara? No way. Her no-knock-offs, no-nonsense attitude translates into her personal style, from the gym to the office.

She’s likely to invest in quality wardrobe pieces, jewelry, and accessories that translate well from season to season and last years instead of buying inexpensive clothes that go out of style in minutes. She works hard and rewards herself for milestones like a new job, promotion, or even her birthday.

Pretty tanzanite drop earrings, diamond studs, key pendants, and several right-hand rings may have a permanent home in her jewelry box. You can’t go wrong with any of these gifts. You could also try rings with a diamond halo, like the Annabelle Ring, mother’s jewelry, or anything with a classic look, like the Rich & Thin Band.

Alternately, some Classic Beauties may have a more carefree personality; in that case, look for free-flowing designs that have a natural or organic feel but are still high-quality, like the Desert Bloom Band or Wreath & Berry Band.

Gift Guide: Rock 'n' Roller

Posted by in Gem Trends | No Comments

Rock ‘n’ Roller

If you know her, it’s obvious. She favors cowboy or motorcycle boots over heels, jeans and easy t-shirts over fussy dresses, and loads of black leather. Her style icons are probably Angelina Jolie, Joan Jett, or maybe Mila Kunis or Taylor Momsen. She adores divine jewelry, clothes, films, music, and décor that leans edgier and darker than most. You might find her at a concert, art gallery, film festival, and possibly tattoo parlors. She follows the beat of her own drummer, and may have even gone to art school or joined a theater group. If she has an opinion, she’ll give it to you.

So how can you get a great gift for this feisty woman? She’s likely to love rich, vibrant colors like ruby, emerald, sapphire, tanzanite, and garnet. More unusual gems like black onyx, black diamond, smoky quartz, green amethyst, and iolite would also fit right into place in her jewelry box. A signature ring with a stand-out gem (like the Vahagan Ring or Ararat Ring) and a pair of black and white diamond-studded hoops or bold drop earrings would perfectly complement her look. She’d dig a pendant like the Moon and Star or Triscele to add flair to any neckline.

She’d rock a silver band like the Vine Ring daily, but if you give her a black diamond Lotus Ring, she just might tattoo your name on a visible body part. Your love is forever, and she wants the world to know it.

Gift Guide: True Romantic

Posted by in Gem Trends | No Comments

True Romance

Never one to give up, this type of woman believes in true love and if she happens to have lost it once, she’ll keep looking until she finds it again. She’s completely devoted to her friends, family, and pets, whether they’re dogs, cats, or guinea pigs. If she’s not allowed to have pets in her apartment, you can bet that she’s likely to volunteer at the local shelter for her fix of furry cuddles.

The True Romantic tends to dress to emphasize her femininity, choosing clothes and accessories with care that showcase details such as lace, satin, velvet, suede, and ruffles — anything sensual to the touch. Relaxing beach resorts, bed and breakfasts, and cozy ski lodges rank among her favorite getaways. Looking for a gift for your favorite True Romantic? Celebrate her individuality by choosing unique jewelry that celebrates her love of all things romantic like the Carina Ring or the Band of Hearts Ring. The Love Notes Necklace is a sweet way to keep love close to her heart. This romantic envelope opens to hold an engraveable plate on which you can inscribe a special message. Perfect to treasure forever.

If she’s not into wearing her heart on her sleeve, look for jewelry with soft, scrolling waves, like the Sea Spray Band or with a unique touch like the Acadia Ring. The Naked Cushion Petite Earrings, as well as the Flowering Stud Earrings are delicate touches sure to put a smile on her face.

Gift Guide: Vintage Vamp

Posted by in Gem Trends | No Comments

Vintage Vamp

Her love of the quirky and old-fashioned sets her apart, whether it’s ’50s-inspired society glam, World War II-era elegance with a modern touch, or a bit of kitsch lifted from the ’60s. This lady loves emulating style icons like the whimsical Zooey Deschanel, impeccably groomed Dita von Teese, fashionable Evan Rachel Wood, and the always-unpredictable Katy Perry. She just adores expressing herself through clothes, make-up, hair, and jewelry, much more than most women.

Looking for a special gift that she’ll always treasure? The Vintage Vamp in your life would definitely rock a colored gemstone engagement ring. Go for color in green tourmaline, iolite, ruby, and fire opal gems in antique-inspired settings, like the smashing Dauphine Ring in emerald or something straight out of a period film like the Chantilly Ring in aquamarine and diamond set in romantic rose gold. Pearls with a diamond stud are her type of saucy elegance, as well as antique-inspired Belle Earrings in sapphire. Intricate pendants like the Palm Fan Medallion and the Grace Cross are perfect for this old-fashioned lady.

Your Vamp is one to own a bevy of great costume and fine jewelry, and will buy herself delicious baubles to wear on any occasion. Why not get her a delicious gift like the Winter Palace Ring or Flamenco Ring?

Gift Guide: Glamour Girl

Posted by in Gem Trends | 2 Comments

Glamour Girl

It isn’t just diamonds that are a girl’s best friend — vivid green emeralds, crimson-red rubies, and cornflower-blue sapphires all have a home in the Glamour Girl’s jewelry box. She makes it a point to look her best at all times, whether that means wearing the latest fashions with designer heels or getting pampered at the salon and spa. She’s likely to hit new restaurants and clubs faster than anyone else, and loves being the center of attention. Big, beautiful gems and look-at-me pieces will win her heart. If you’re looking for a great gift for the leading lady in your life, take a cue from the red carpet.

She adores precious gems beloved by actresses and royalty, the bigger the better. Don’t have a celebrity-size bank account? You can still treat her like the star she is with couture-inspired pieces like the Racetrack Ring in pretty-in-pink rose quartz or the big, bodacious Naked Cushion Ring in glittery, London blue topaz. Movie-star-inspired baubles like the Natalie Ring will make her (and everyone else’s) jaw drop.

Trendy necklaces, like the Key to an Open Heart and initial pendants are also a great choice for a woman who likes to keep up with fashion. Last, but not least, juicy gemstone earrings are an automatic attention grabber. Try the Naked Cushion Double Earrings or the ever-popular Monsoon Earrings for a knock-out accessory.
