It’s that time again! Every week on “Gemvara’s Weekly Wish List” we feature a new Gemvara employee, their favorite Gemvara piece, and a little bit about them. We hope this will be a great way for you to get to know us and become inspired by the pieces we love most.

This week, meet — Lee, UI/UX Specialist

If I had all the money in the world I would…
… start by fixing up the T. It could use some attention.

Define your style in 3 words.
Can’t touch this!

On my days off you’ll find me…
Creating something. I am always juggling one or more projects to keep me sharp on a technology or to help me learn something new.

Book or Movie?
Game! Lately, it’s been Minecraft. It’s pretty much Lego’s for grownups.

What’s your favorite piece at Gemvara? How did you customize it?
My sisters and I were looking for a classic design for my mother’s birthday this year. We decided on the 14k white gold Nine-Gem Band because we thought it would go well with some of her other jewelry. We picked out the piece in emeralds (because it’s her birthstone) and diamonds (because she loved diamonds). When we gave it to her, she was speechless! I recall her sneaking glances at it for weeks after she received it.

If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?
Probably some exotic dubstep remix of the original Tetris soundtrack.

Favorite snack from the office kitchen?
It’s always a joy to find cold pizza in the refrigerator.

Funniest Gemvara memory, so far?
I’ve played several pranks on the company, most of which involved rickrolls, which are delicious but little-known Dutch pastries.

What’s the best part about working at Gemvara?
From day one, this team has constantly strived to build a better business. It’s exciting for me to look at what we’ve built every day and ask “How can we make this better for our customers?

Define your style in three words.
Foodie, eclectic, proper.

On my days off you’ll find me…
Cooking up a storm!

Book or Movie?
Book when alone; movie with people.

What’s your favorite piece at Gemvara? How did you customize it?
The Monsoon Earrings are classy, yet contemporary.  I chose amethyst on white gold because purple is my favorite color and the stone is large enough to show the bright color.

Perfect place to wear your piece?
Everywhere, as long as it matches my outfit.

If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?
Bill Conti’s compositions for The Thomas Crown Affair (1999).

Favorite snack from the office kitchen?
Has to be Ramen Noodle Soup.

Funniest Gemvara memory, so far?
Probably involves Dan! Perhaps when he got iced.

Ultimately allowing more people to find something that means a lot to them and has a story behind it.

This week, meet — Jake, Marketing Specialist

If I had all the money in the world I would…
Produce a film. Win an Oscar. Thank Mom.

Define your style in three words.
Chuck Taylor Sneakers.

On my days off you’ll find me…
In the mountains of Vermont or on the beach on Cape Cod. Pretty cliche, huh?

Book or Movie?
Book. Unless it’s that Oscar-winning film I produce.

What’s your favorite piece at Gemvara? How did you customize it?
It’s got to be the Emerald Isle Ring in yellow gold with a ruby center stone. My grandmother – we call her Nanny – had a ruby ring for decades before it was stolen a few years back. As a gift for her 85th birthday, my family decided we would buy her a replacement. I sat down with her one day and browsed the ruby ring selection on the site until she found a ring that she loved (note: grandmothers take their time when it comes to jewelry). I hand delivered the ring to her and she was nearly in tears when she put it on. Big thanks to our customer care and fulfillment teams for handling the order with extra special care.

Perfect place to wear your piece?
I’d have to defer to Nanny on this one.

If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?
I’ve got Talking Heads “Once in a Lifetime” stuck in my head today, so let’s go with that.

Favorite snack from the office kitchen?
I tend to gravitate towards the fireballs, although I still haven’t decided if I actually enjoy them or not.

Funniest Gemvara memory, so far?
Our holiday party had its share of memorable moments, but the one that stands out would have to be Dan Marques’ embarrassing display of his punching ability (or lack thereof) on the one of those punching bag machines.

What’s the best part about working at Gemvara?
The people. We work hard but don’t take ourselves too seriously.

Running after my two kids.

Fever Pitch.

This week, meet– Tim, Corporate Controller

If I had all the money in the world I would…
Donate most of it to charity, purchase season tickets to all four Boston sports teams, and probably buy an island somewhere in the Caribbean! Wanna come visit?

Define your style in 3 words.
Diverse, nonchalant, simple.

On my days off you’ll find me…
Spending time with my wife, playing/watching sports, competing (at anything!), hanging with family/friends, listening to/playing music, and just generally loving life.

Book or Movie?
Depends on my mood, but usually a slapstick comedy movie like Old School, Major League, or National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation… all the classics!

What’s your favorite piece at Gemvara? How did you customize it?
I chose the Elizabeth Ring because it is very classy and has a vintage look to it. I customized it with a diamond center stone and diamond accent stones, as I wanted to offer the traditional engagement ring to my wife (that said, I’m sure it would look beautiful in any combination of gemstones and precious metals!). The ring is positively gorgeous and I thought it represented her overall taste – classic, vintage, simple, and beautiful. Luckily for me, she said, “Yes” and she absolutely adores the ring!  To top it all off with a touch of irony, her name is Elizabeth to boot!

Perfect place to wear your piece?
My wife, Elizabeth, wears her engagement ring and matching band everywhere. I can’t even tell you how many compliments she’s received on the sheer beauty and classic nature of the Elizabeth Ring! Don’t tell her I said this, but I still catch her admiring it on her hand all the time.

If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?
Rocky IV.

Favorite snack from the office kitchen?
Those Ritz crackers with the little cheese tub and red magic wand – I seldom leave the kitchen without taking one!

Funniest Gemvara memory, so far?
Hands down, Gemvara karaoke night. It was fantastic to hang out with the team and see everyone out of their element!

What’s the best part about working at Gemvara?
Very simply put, the team. I’ve never been around such an eclectic, energetic, selfless, and team-oriented group of people. The team has truly adopted the philosophy of “work hard, play hard” and it really is a pleasure to come to work every day!

If I had all the money in the world I would…
Park in the One Financial Center garage guilt-free.

Define your style in three words.
Current, colorful, comfortable.

On my days off you’ll find me…
On the beach in York, Maine.

Book or Movie?
Book.

What’s your favorite piece at Gemvara? How did you customize it?
The Inside-Outside Hoop Earrings in citrine, peridot and yellow gold from the Gemvara Essentials line.  I love the way the citrine fades into the yellow gold and the combination of colors.

Perfect place to wear your piece?
Everywhere.

If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?
We all live in yellow submarine.
Favorite snack from the office kitchen?
The wine.

Proposing to Emily and her wonderful reaction.

This week, meet– Patrick, CAD Modeler

If I had all the money in the world I would…
One first-class ticket to space! Actually, if had all the money I would probably bring some friends along too. I want to float around in zero gravity, but it is currently way beyond the means of what a normal person can afford.

Define your style in three words.
T-shirt and jeans.

On my days off you’ll find me…
Usually at home hanging out… pretty low key. My roommate and I are trying to get a small t-shirt business going so sometimes you’ll find me creating new designs and planning our empire.

Book or Movie?
I love movies, but I read on my commute to/from work.

What’s your favorite piece at Gemvara? How did you customize it?
PAL-ENG-28, aka the Pave Lotus Ring. I’d make it in white gold or platinum with diamond center and diamond/black diamond accent stones. Coming from an artistic background I love the union of form and function in this piece. The floral design is not over powering and in person it is the perfect size to avoid being gaudy. It is a very elegant piece that I loved the moment I saw it. Jeet Palavwala is an extremely talented designer.

Perfect place to wear your piece?
Haha, I wouldn’t wear it (it’s a woman’s ring!), but it could be worn to any kind of event, formal or otherwise. It will surely make people stop and look.

If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?
It may not be a whole soundtrack, but the James Bond opening “Diamonds are Forever” does the job perfectly.

Favorite snack from the office kitchen?
The little dark chocolate Hersey bars.

Funniest Gemvara memory, so far?
The company party at Jillian’s when Kate asked if anyone wanted to take “Redheaded Slut” shots. She turned around to find Amy and I (the only two redheads in the company) standing right behind her laughing.

What’s the best part about working at Gemvara?
The atmosphere, the people, the work I do… I love it all. Gemvara is a great company and I feel lucky to be part of the team.

This week, meet– Mag, Marketing Coordinator

If I had all the money in the world I would…
Support small businesses, local farmers, and independent artists on a large scale worldwide. Reform the US prison and education systems. Fight man-made climate change. Once that’s all done, I’ll build a huge house somewhere warm for all my friends and go on lots of roadtrips to see music. Also, I’d make every effort to achieve question #7.

Define your style in three words.
Bright, comfortable, variety.

On my days off you’ll find me…
Hanging out with my friends, seeing music, and attempting to help my roommates make group dinners (but usually I just do the dishes).

Book or Movie?
Book when it’s warm and sunny outside, movie when it’s chilly.

What’s your favorite piece at Gemvara? How did you customize it?
One of the pieces I love is the Band of Brilliance, in 14k rose gold with ruby.

Perfect place to wear your piece?
At work — so I can admire it while I type and I’m sure not to lose it.

If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?
I’d love for LCD Soundsystem to follow me around and play the soundtrack of my life.

Favorite snack from the office kitchen?
Definitely the mini Hershey bars. At first, all we had was fruity candy, and I admit I was the person that anonymously requested chocolate.

Funniest Gemvara memory, so far?
Taking over a karaoke bar at 6pm on Friday afternoon after the company scavenger hunt, which led to a lot of blackmail material.

What’s the best part about working at Gemvara?
The people and the energy.

Eclectic. I’m flexible.

On my days off you’ll find me…
As close as I can get to the Atlantic Ocean.

Book or Movie?
Sadly… movie.

What’s your favorite piece at Gemvara? How did you customize it?
The Rose & Thorn Ring. I’d first seen it with a blue sapphire, which was stunning, but after playing with several iterations found that the fire opal complimented the organic design of the ring and seemed to unite the piece.

Perfect place to wear your piece?
On my wife’s hand, anywhere.

If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?
Beautiful Day by U2.

Favorite snack from the office kitchen?
Dark Chocolate. I’ve read articles that say it’s healthy… Really!!

Funniest Gemvara memory, so far?
Tim Sousa’s entry in the “Ugliest Sweater Contest”. He really put some thought into it!

What’s the best part about working at Gemvara?
The level of enthusiasm within the teams. It’s amazing.

Gemvara's Weekly Wish List

Welcome to our newest blog series, “Gemvara’s Weekly Wish List!” Every week we will feature a new Gemvara employee, their favorite Gemvara piece, and a little bit about them. We hope this will be a great way for you to get to know us and become inspired by the pieces we love most.

First up, meet– Rose, Senior Product Manager

If I had all the money in the world I would…
Take a 6 month sabbatical every 3 years to live somewhere else in the world (first up: a cottage on an Argentinian farm or an apartment in Prauge.) And in between, come back and do exactly what I’m doing now. Probably with nicer shoes, though. All the rest would go to help educate girls and women in developing countries and places where women don’t have as much opportunity as here.

Define your style in three words.
Comfortable. Mildy-eccentric. Tall.

On my days off you’ll find me…
At a farmers market picking out tasty seasonal vegetables and then introducing said veggies to some good olive oil and my friend the Duke of Grillington (my 64,000 BTU Weber grill).

Book or Movie?
TV.

What’s your favorite piece at Gemvara? How did you customize it?
I really like the popular Lotus Ring we have, but I personally don’t love something so high up on my finger – this matching Lotus Pendant is perfect to me because it’s just as beautiful but is a piece you can wear more easily. I personalized it with rose and yellow gold ( mixing metals is so “in” right now) and with a rhodolite garnet in the center. Rhodolite garnet is a beautiful yet classy pink that is really set off by the rose and yellow golds surrounding it – it looks like a little ball of fire hanging from your neck!

Perfect place to wear your piece?
My apartment in Prague. (Because I’ll have all the money in the world, right? You already said I did. You can’t take it back now).

If your life was a movie, what would the soundtrack be?
Funkytown.

Favorite snack from the office kitchen?
The mini Hershey’s milk chocolate nuggets. You usually won’t see any in the kitchen, because I consume ALL of them when they do appear. #chocolate.

Funniest Gemvara memory, so far?
Our CEO playing a joke on our engineering intern by making her think that her very first code deploy had brought down our entire site.

What’s the best part about working at Gemvara?
Seeing what people order and how they customize their pieces – it has been really cool to see how truly personal many of these pieces are, how full of meaning people make them. People aren’t just buying sparkly stuff because it’s pretty – our customers are creating personal pieces that express an occasion, relationship, meaning, love, gratitude, sentiment – so much more than just jewelry!
