The Great Gatsby is arguably the best “Great American Novel” dripping with love, deceit, and all things materialistic. The novel is a staple in practically every high school English class, and now being transformed (for the second time) into the next Christmas Blockbuster. Baz Luhrmann’s, soon to be hi,t is starring Carey Mulligan, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tobey Maguire and music from this century rather than the last. The part Gemvara is looking forward to the most is the sheer abundance of extravagant gems. In a time of flamboyant excess and no rules, everything sparkled and glimmered and this movie will be no exception. Check out the trailer below and get ready for some major jewelry lust.

Did you know that in Ireland St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated as a religious holiday, much like Christmas and Easter? Also — not to toot our own horn or anything — but the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was actually not in Ireland, but in Boston, Massachusetts in 1737! Here are some more St. Paddy’s Day tidbits to get you in the Irish spirit:

For starters, it says that he’s a savvy guy. He takes a hint very well. He appreciates you enough to want to buy you something nice (even if he may have trouble affording it). And best of all, he knows a good deal when he sees it.
Make his wallet (and your jewelry box) happy this Valentine’s Day by sending your guy this offer:
Don’t forget to share the love! Send this link to your friends and family so they can join in on the sparkle.

Make your Valentine’s Day gifts even sweeter by adding a surprise engraving. It’s a small feat, but believe me — it can make all the difference. Your loved one will be blown away by how thoughtful you are and you can act like you put in so much effort, when really it was super easy.
Oh, and did we mention it’s free until February 5th?

Just in time for the holiday of chocolates, roses, and jewelry (hint, hint: Valentine’s Day), Gemvara is premiering a brand-new collection lovingly named Timeless Hearts.
The collection features pendants, rings, and engagement rings with matching wedding bands (!) — all designed with the iconic symbol of devotion in mind: the heart.
The designs are fluid and elegant, reminiscent of the waytrue love flows over you. Some of the styles are delicate, while others offer an edgier take on the heart motif. A few of my favorites are the Tattooed with Love Ring and the Ecstatic Heart Solitaire Ring (featured above). The Ecstatic Heart Solitaire is similar in style to Gemvara’s Band of Hearts Ring, but with the addition of a gorgeous center stone. The pavé Heart’s Wave Ring (below) would look stunning in any gemstone, but how nice would it be in garnet for a Valentine’s Day gift?
Our Timeless Hearts Collection will be available on Gemvara.com mid-January. Gentlemen, be sure to take advantage of this news for the upcoming holiday and keep her heart beating well into 2012.
This week, The Elizabeth Taylor Collection went up for auction at Christie’s Rockefeller Center headquarters.
In it’s first day, The Elizabeth Taylor Collection broke 7 records. Five of which were pieces from her hubby, Richard Burton.
Aside from Liz, it was a great week for Gemvara customer Daniel W. who won our What a Guy contest! Daniel’s story about his fiancée Teresa was so sweet, it won over everyone in the office.
Are you a member of Pinterest? We are and we’d love to be friends with you. Come check out our gem-themed boards.
Style Caster thinks that nice jewelry is always a good choice for the holidays. What do you think?
We are honored that USA Today included us as a popular gift choice for this year.
Last but not least, Britney Spears announced her engagement to Jason Trawick today. We can’t wait to see the ring!
Have a sparkling weekend!
Guys like Daniel don’t come around every day. And according to Daniel, girls like Teresa don’t either. It is this sentiment that has crowned Daniel W. of Munster, Indiana the winner of Gemvara’s What a Guy contest.
On Tuesday afternoon, Daniel received an e-mail letting him know that he won the ring he designed for his fiancée and a Sony BRAVIA® 46’’ 3D HDTV. Talk about a sweet deal! Daniel was ecstatic.
All participants in the contest were asked to design a piece and write a short blurb about why they designed what they did. The entries with the most votes were then tallied and a panel of judges picked the winner from the top 10.
Here is Daniel’s story:
“Elegant. Unexpected. Feisty. Unique. Classic. These words don’t make sense on their own, but they do if you know Teresa. I get to marry the love of my life next year, and I can’t think of a better way to honor her than this beauty of a ring: a braided band that signifies our interconnected lives; dots of diamonds mark the many small moments that make up a lifetime; and a big, beautiful gemstone, unexpected, warm, fiery, one of a kind — like her. It’s not a solitaire so much as it is a promise for a beautiful future.”
The ring Daniel designed is the stunning Emerald Isle Ring in platinum featuring a bold fire opal with shimmering side diamonds. We can only imagine how beautiful it will look on Teresa’s finger.
Congratulations again to Daniel and Teresa, and thanks for all who participated. We loved reading each entry, and we hope they’ve inspired you as much as they have inspired us.

In her book, My Love Affair with Jewelry, Elizabeth Taylor wrote, “I never, never thought of my jewelry as trophies. I’m here to take care of them and to love them. When I die and they go off to auction I hope whoever buys them gives them a really good home.”
Well, Elizabeth, we have a feeling your wish has come true.
Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry collection set a world record last night for the most valuable private jewelry collection sold at auction, fetching nearly $116M ($115,932,000 to be exact). And it’s not even over yet!
Last night’s Evening Sale of Elizabeth Taylor’s legendary jewelry set five records for jewelry sold at auction. Not surprisingly, all the record-breaking pieces were gifts from Elizabeth’s husband, Richard Burton. (The man had good taste.) Here are the five miraculous pieces:
- The 50-carat La Peregrina necklace, thought to be one of the finest pearls in the world, was estimated at $2- $3 million. Burton purchased it for $37,000 and it sold for $11,842,500.
- The Taj Mahal ruby and gold chain by Cartier set a new world record for an Indian jewel. Given to Elizabeth for her 40th birthday, the necklace was estimated at $300,000-$500,000. It sold for $8.8 million.
- The sapphire and diamond Sautoir by Bulgari, also a gift from Burton to Elizabeth on her 40th birthday, was estimated at $600,000-$800,000. It sold for $5.9 million.
- The 8.24-carat Van Cleef & Arpels ruby and diamond ring estimated at $1-$1.5 million, set a world record for price per carat for a ruby. This ring was given to Elizabeth as a Christmas present in 1968. The price was realized at $4.2 million.
- The highlight of the night, the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond — a 33.29 carat Asscher-cut ring given to her by Burton in 1968 — blew away its estimate of $2.5-$3.5 million. It sold for $8,818,500 setting a record for highest price per carat for a white diamond.
Phew. If those numbers don’t make your head spin, then we don’t know what will. However, to ease our minds a bit, it is nice to know that a portion of the proceeds will go to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.
Now, if all this talk of rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and diamonds has to itching for some precious gems this holiday, we have a few substitutes that may hold you over. Our Penelope Ring set with a ruby center-stone mimics the diamond halo effect of Elizabeth’s ruby ring. Also, our Reese Ring is an emerald-cut diamond, similar to the Asscher-cut of the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond. While these gems will never compare to Elizabeth’s magnificent stones, the idea of designing a piece of jewelry just for you, or someone you love, fulfills Elizabeth’s ideal of cultivating a meaningful jewelry collection.
Maybe your gems will sell for millions one day. Hey, a girl can dream.
