Grammy’s Go Glam

Grammy red carpet style is usually a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, and a big helping of hip-hop. Someone will be wearing studded leather, someone will have on over-the-top sequins, and bangle-sized hoops trump tasteful diamond studs. But last night’s Grammy Awards were a welcome exception: the red carpet was actually pretty glamorous. The Oscars, but with shorter skirts (and Lady Gaga as Bjork.)

With all that elegance, it’s not surprising this year’s top Grammy jewelry trend is diamond drop earrings: less flashy than chandeliers but much more luxurious than simple studs.

Taylor Swift wore stunning 12-carat pair of dangling cognac diamond earrings. Pink, decked out in $2.5 million in diamonds, had 30-carat diamond drops. Beyonce, Heidi Klum, and Mary J. Blige also chose diamond dangles. Many styles had the pear shaped silhouette that also dominated the SAG Awards. It looks like the diamond drop earring has replaced the chandelier as a celebrity favorite.

Not everyone did the drop. Nicole Kidman and Rihanna chose diamond clusters on the ear for a more restrained elegance. And tasteful studs were the choice of Jennifer Hudson, Ciara, Kathy Griffin, and LL Cool J.

One other top Grammy trend might have been inspired by the Song of the Year: Beyonce’s Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It.) Both Katy Perry and Kristen Bell wore brand new diamond pave engagement rings on the red carpet.
